JESUS HEALING MINISTRY ORPHANAGE - JHM
Books and Bread for Kenya have been caring for 16 orphans in beautiful but rented accommodation for the past 10 years.
In 2017 the trustee decided it would be sensible to buy some land and to build a secure, permanent home for those orphaned children.
Prices and legal proceedings were explored and in February 2018 half an acre of land was purchased on the outskirts of Mombasa, near a main road, hospital, and local school.
Over the next two years, BBK hoped to raise enough funds to begin building the home which must be surrounded by a security wall to keep the children safe.
FUNDRAISING AND EVENTS
An extraordinary effort was put into fundraising over the last 24 months and it has been the best ever.
Trustees continued to present our work to communities around the UK, presentations took place in various community groups from Rotary Clubs to school classrooms. Spreading the word far and wide of our mission.
FASHION SHOW - Rose Elliot (volunteer) took the lead in our annual fashion show at Bethany City Church Sunderland, using donated clothing which raised over £1200 in 2018 and a following £1650 in 2019.
ROYAL TEA PARTY - On 30th June 2018, A Royal Tea Party held at Chester-Le-Street Cricket Club. 100 people gathered on a sunny afternoon for high tea. There was live entertainment from singers and musicians and David Taylor local magician wow our guests with table-side magic.
Local Heart radio DJ Wayne Bond ended the afternoon hosting our auction of fabulous prizes. Many of which were donated from local businesses such as Interior Design Package from Catherine Muir (www.interiordesignerdurham.co.uk) to meat packs from local Spennymoor butchers, N.Hockings, other prizes included a Tetley tea hamper, Alnwick Castle annual entry tickets and so much more (See photos below)
A staggering £3010 was raised and we thank all those who have supported us in so many different ways.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
An 8-foot security wall was built around the new land including robust steel gates ensuring safety. The trustees in the UK and the leaders in Kenya agreed that the newly named “Jesus’ Power House” would soon be built, ensuring that these children will never need to return to the streets.
BBK trustee Maureen Nevitt and volunteer Caroline Warren traveled to Kenya in June 2019 to discuss all the costs and layout of the property at great lengths (Click Here to see final plans in photographs below).
The total cost was agreed to at £38,000. BBK had already raised £13,000 through the generosity of so many. We stepped out in faith that the rest of the money would come in.
BLACK TIE FUNDRAISER
On 26th September 2019 BBK held its first-ever Black Tie event named ‘Out of Africa’, (Click here to watch the video) 130 people gathered for food and entertainment at Ramside Hall in Country Durham. It was a truly magnificent evening of food and celebration, auctions, wishing tree gifts, African music, and dance.
We raised a phenomenal £23,000!
Thanks again must go to all that donated and attended. A special thanks go to our event sponsors Smartoutdoor, a local Intelligent Outdoor Advertising company who brought along their advertising taxi www.smartoutdoor.co.uk and Sunderland based Video Game Developer, Coatsink, www.CoatSink.com .
Be proud to know you have changed lives forever.
BUILDING
The £23,000 raised allowed the building work to continue at speed.
With the fluctuation of the exchange rate from Pounds to Kenyan Shilling and the change of prices in building materials, BBK calculated we needed only £7000 to finish the build.
Fundraising continued with presentations, stalls at differing events, and donations from well-wishers until 21st. March 2020.
Within months, not only did the needed £7000 came in, but more was given specifically for solar panels to be installed at the home. This would run the electricity at the orphanage and may be able to feed some into the national grid for extra cash!
THE BUILDING WAS COMPLETE
In April 2020 the building was finally complete and despite the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19 the orphans moved into their new home, ‘Jesus’ Power House’

Finally, BBK would like to thank those who have so generously donated over the years and to our sponsors who donate regularly; your faithfulness is much appreciated, and with God on our side, we cannot fail.
